Spain in May 2026

May is Spain's shoulder season at its best. The south is warm but not yet the furnace of July. The north is green and uncrowded. The Balearics are quiet before summer rates kick in. This is what's good this month, what to book, and what to watch for — checked against official sources, not recycled from last year's guide.

Mid-May in Spain: the light has shifted. It's no longer the pale sun of March. Terraces are full by 11am in Seville but the white heat of July is still weeks away. Madrid's Retiro is deep green. Barcelona mornings are cool enough for coffee outside. The Mediterranean is warming but still bracing. This is the window — warm days, cool evenings, and crowds that haven't yet peaked.

Andalusia.

May is Andalusia's sweet spot. Seville, Granada, Córdoba — 22–28°C, warm enough for terraces, not yet the 40°C that arrives in July. The Feria de Córdoba (May 23–30) transforms the city into flamenco, horses, and casetas. If you're not attending, visit before May 22 or after May 31 — accommodation prices triple during feria week and availability drops below 15%. Book the Alhambra two to four weeks ahead at the official site — Nasrid Palaces slots are the tightest in Spain. The Costa de la Luz is still quiet, the old city of Cádiz empty of the summer crowds that will arrive in six weeks. Andalusia in depth →

Barcelona and Catalonia.

Temperatures 18–24°C with mixed sun and cloud. The sea is cool but swimmable at 17–18°C. Light afternoon showers possible mid-week. Primavera Sound (May 28–31) fills Parc del Fòrum — hotels in Diagonal Mar and Poblenou will be expensive and loud. If you're not festival-going, book accommodation in Eixample or Gràcia. Sagrada Familia tower access needs three to five days advance for weekends. Day trips open up: Girona in 40 minutes by train, Sitges in 35, the Costa Brava coves at their pre-summer best. Northern Spain.

Basque Country, Galicia, Asturias — 16–22°C, green, uncrowded. San Sebastián has afternoon rain Wednesday and Thursday. People often skip the north in May, worried about weather. Mistake. The food scene is world-class, the landscapes are lush, and the crowds won't arrive until July. Best value in Spain right now. Pintxos tours book one to two weeks out for weekends. The Guggenheim in Bilbao is usually same-day. Basque Country in depth →

Madrid and the interior.

Dry, sunny, 20–26°C. Evenings still drop to 12°C — the light jacket isn't optional yet. San Isidro wraps up today, May 15 — last day for chulapo traditions in Las Vistillas. The Prado Museum is same-week. Day trips open up: Toledo in 30 minutes, Segovia in under 30. The Retiro rose garden is at peak. Madrid in depth →

The Balearics.

Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza — 20–25°C, mostly sunny, sea at 18–20°C. May is the secret season. Pre-summer quiet, excellent hiking and cycling, hotels at pre-summer rates. Ibiza's opening parties are still weeks away. If you want peaceful Ibiza with empty beaches, now is perfect. Ferries with car spaces sell out on Friday and Sunday sailings — book one to two weeks ahead. Foot passenger tickets are usually available same-day.

What to book now.

Alhambra Nasrid Palaces — sold out through May 27, June slots opening now. Córdoba accommodation for feria week — below 15% availability, prices at triple normal rates. Stay in Jaén or Écija and day-trip in if you don't have a booking.

AVE weekend trains — Madrid–Barcelona and Madrid–Seville prices rise two to three times close to departure. Book one to two weeks ahead. Compare across Renfe, Iryo, and Ouigo at Renfe or Trainline. Sagrada Familia tower access — three to five days for weekends. Flamenco tablaos in Seville — three to five days for quality venues. San Sebastián pintxos tours — one to two weeks. Balearic ferries with car spaces — one to two weeks for weekends. Full advance-booking guide →

What to watch for.

The Feria de Córdoba (May 23–30) makes the city extremely busy — avoid if you're not attending. Primavera Sound (Barcelona, May 28–31) fills Parc del Fòrum and surrounding hotels. Labour Day (May 1) has passed, but note for future: national holiday, reduced hours everywhere. Late May southern Spain can reach 30°C — siesta hours (14:00–17:00) exist for a reason. Plan indoor activities during peak heat. The north and higher elevations remain comfortable.

A note on traveling well.

Spain welcomed 94 million visitors in 2024. The pressure is real in Barcelona, Mallorca, San Sebastián, and parts of Andalusia. Spread out — if visiting Barcelona, add Girona or Tarragona. If Mallorca, explore the interior towns. Respect neighborhoods where people live — keep noise down at night. Southern Spain faces recurring drought — short showers, reuse towels. Eat at family-run bars, not international chains. Learn five words: buenos días, gracias, por favor, la cuenta, dónde está. It changes every interaction.

Where to stay. In Seville, the old city centre puts you in walking distance of everything. In Granada, the Albaicín for atmosphere — narrow streets, Alhambra views. In Barcelona, Eixample or Gràcia for walkable, lived-in neighborhoods. In Madrid, Barrio de las Letras or Malasaña. In San Sebastián, the old town for pintxos crawling. In Mallorca, Palma old town or a rural agroturismo. Book directly with hotels where possible — they keep more of the revenue. Paradores are Spain's state-run historic hotels, often in converted castles and monasteries — worth checking even if you don't stay.

The June edition publishes June 1. Mediterranean beaches hitting their stride, San Juan bonfires (night of June 23), Sónar in Barcelona, Balearics in pre-peak glory. Alhambra tickets for June are selling now — don't wait. Spain Right Now — weekly conditions →
